A few Highlights about the Economic and Audience Impact of Equestrian Sports.

Growing Audience

The World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Oct 2010, was hosted outside of Europe for the first time! An immense media success with 600,000 spectators, a total of 6.5 hours of television coverage on NBC and 460 million television viewers from around the world watched The Games.

Kur Encore!

Among all other equestrian competitions, the dressage tests with the introduction of Musical Freestyle, named Kur, are about to go through the same audience phenomenon as ice skating competitions, i.e. events that are not only attended/watched as a sport contest, but also as an artistic show. This has for consequence to widely open the audience scope towards spectators who were not initially horse aficionados.

The Horse's Weight*

There are 9.2 million horses in the United States, including 2.7 million showing horses. There are 2 million horse owners in the United States. Furthermore, 4.6 million Americans are involved in the equine industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. The horse industry has a direct economic effect on the United States of $39 billion annually.

Income Levels*

The Deloitte study* dispels the misperception that the horse industry is an activity only for wealthy individuals. However, the horse owner remains obviously wealthier than the US average: 66% of horse owners (vs 50% in the USA) have an household income of more than $50,000 and 28% (vs 20%) above $100,000.

Demograpics*

Horse ownership appeals to people of all ages. The most horse owners (41%) are between the ages of 45 and 59. The 30-44 age bracket is the next most significant group with 35% of horses. The youngest demographic (18-29) is also coming on strong and owns 16% of all horses in America.

In Ohio*

The Ohio horse industry has a significant impact on the economy in the State of Ohio producing goods and services valued at $1.4 billion and directly providing 16,600 full-time equivalent jobs. There are 307,000 horses in Ohio (70% of these are involved in showing and recreation) i.e. the 5th state in the USA, immediately preceding Kentucky. 181,700 Ohioans are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers. Even more participate as spectators.
